Goth Cat Tree Design: Why Structure Matters More Than Style

A Goth Cat Tree, a Designer’s Eye, and the Day My Cat Judged My Interior Design

As an interior designer, every day I am constantly studying one thing: how structure and atmosphere come together.
Why does a piece of clothing appear upscale?
Why do some designs immediately exude an attitude, while others seem like cheap fast fashion?
The answer is usually not a single element, but a combination of structure, materials and visual language.
Interestingly, this logic also applies to the furniture in the house. Even - the cat furniture is no exception.

It was on a weekend afternoon that I truly realized this. That day, I was tidying up the living room. Standing in the middle of the room, I suddenly noticed something: All the things in my house were quite nice, except for the cat climbing frame in the corner, which seemed to have fallen in from another universe.

Muted yellow wool fabric.
Coarse hemp rope pillars.
Shape resembling an over-inflated mushroom.

My Persian cat was quite content, climbing up and down every day. But as someone with a bit of a "visual structure" disorder, I simply couldn't resist starting to ponder a question:

Is there a kind of cat climbing frame that doesn't look like a pet product?

So, for the first time, I really delved into understanding the goth cat tree.
To be honest, at first I was just attracted by the name. But the more I studied it, the more I realized that this design is actually very reasonable.

Because cats inherently possess a natural "dark aura".

Why is the design logic of the Goth Cat Tree actually very smart?

Many people think that the "goth cat tree" is just a matter of style, but from a design perspective, there is actually a very clear logic behind it.

In the field of fashion design, we often use a term: visual language.

Different styles of design convey their essence through various elements.

For example:

Minimalist design emphasizes lines
Retro design emphasizes textures
Street style emphasizes proportions

And the goth style usually relies on three things:

Dark color tone
Geometric structure
Mysterious symbol

When these elements are combined, they will create a visual atmosphere with a touch of dramatic flair.

Interestingly, this language turned out to be perfectly suitable when placed on the cat furniture.

Cats are nocturnal animals by nature.
They prefer high places.
They like observing.
They like hiding.

So when the design of the cat tower incorporated elements such as the moon, stars and the night sky, it actually looked particularly natural.

Just like cats themselves belong to that scene.

When designers look at cat climbing frames, what they are really observing is the structure.

When many people purchase cat climbing frames, they only consider two factors:

Can cats climb?
Can they catch things?

However, from a design perspective, the cat tower is actually like furniture, and it also has structural logic.

When I look at the cat tree now, the first thing I do is to examine its framework structure.

This is like the style of a piece of clothing.

The pattern is not good. Even the most expensive fabric won't make any difference.

By the same token, if the structure of the cat tower is poorly designed, even if there are more platforms and more toys, they would merely be decorations.

Later, I studied the structures of many solid wood cat trees and found that well-designed cat towers usually have several common features.

The center of gravity design is extremely stable.

The force generated when a cat jumps is greater than what many people imagine.

If the base is light, the entire tower will shake.

This is why many more mature cat towers choose to use wooden structures.

Weight is itself a part of stability.

Later, when I saw a three-tier wooden cat tower by the brand Mewzoom, my initial impression was not about the style, but about the proportions.

The base is wide.
The columns are thick.
The platform is evenly distributed.

This structure enables the cat to jump with almost no shaking.

This is actually called structural security in design.

Cats are very sensitive to this feeling.

The two-level structure should conform to the behavioral logic of cats.

Many cat towers like to build platforms, which look very complicated.

But cats actually don't need mazes.

They prefer a clear hierarchical structure.

A good three-tier cat tree usually has a very clear distribution of functions:

First layer: Rest or transition
Second layer: Observation area
Third layer: High point

This structure is highly consistent with the natural behavior of cats.

Cats prefer to climb up layer by layer rather than make random jumps.

The position of the anchor post must be appropriate.

The "catching column" is the most overlooked design detail of the cat tower.

In fashion design, there is a concept called "touch design".

Clothes not only need to be attractive, but also have a pleasant touch.

Cat scratch posts are the same.

Many cats prefer natural sisal ropes because they have a texture similar to that of tree bark.

When the distance between the scratching post and the platform is appropriate, cats will naturally develop the habit of scratching.

This can also reduce the probability of them grabbing the sofa.

Why are the elements of moon and stars so suitable for cats?

Once, I talked with a friend who is an interior designer about cat furniture.

He said something particularly interesting:

"Cats are actually the creatures in the household that most resemble art installations."

At that moment, I smiled, but later on, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it made sense.

The movements, postures and outlines of the cat are inherently very sculptural.

So when the cat tower design incorporates elements like "moon & star", it creates a very wonderful visual effect.

The cat is sitting on the moon-shaped platform.

The tail hangs down.

The entire cat looks like a silhouette.

This visual effect is actually much more interesting than an ordinary cat climbing frame.

This is why many goth cat trees adopt this design.

From the perspective of clothing design, the material selection for cat furniture

After doing design for a long time, I become particularly sensitive to materials.

The qualities brought by different materials are completely different.

Cat furniture is the same.

The plush cat climbing frame usually has several problems:

Easy to absorb cat hair
Will become old over time
The structure usually relies on the internal panels

And the advantages of the wooden cat tower are quite obvious:

The structure is more stable.
Cleaning is easier.
The appearance is closer to the furniture.

More importantly, over time, the wood develops a natural sense of aging.

Just like a leather jacket.

This change, instead, makes the things more flavorful.

Where the cat tower is placed is actually more important than the cat tower itself.

Later, I discovered that the reason why many cat towers were not used by cats was actually because of the wrong location.

Cats are very sensitive to space.

The ideal position usually consists of three elements.

By the window

Cats can observe what is happening outside.

Birds, trees, and the slightest movement of the grass are all forms of entertainment for the cat.

The corner of the living room

If it's a corner cat tree, the corner position will make the cat feel more secure.

There is a wall behind, providing a wide view.

This is the layout that the cat really likes.

Near the work area

When I was drawing the design draft, the cat would often sleep right beside me.

Sometimes it would sit on the cat tower and stare at me.

That feeling is somewhat like being supervised by the boss.

Cats actually understand design better than we do.

Sometimes I think that humans spend a lot of time studying design theories.

However, cats can judge whether a design is good or not with just one action.

If the cat is willing to jump up every day.

The structure of the explanation is reasonable.

If the cat is willing to sleep there.

The design of the space provides a sense of security.

If the cat is willing to observe the world there.

The height is just right.

This is probably the most genuine product review.

The final observation

One night, only one floor lamp was turned on in my living room.

The cat is sitting at the top of the cat tower.

The moon-shaped platform precisely forms a contour.

The entire cat looked like a black silhouette.

At that moment, I suddenly realized something:

The cat climbing frame can actually also be considered a piece of design work.

It is both the territory of the cat and a part of the space.

When a goth cat tree stands quietly in the corner of the room, it doesn't look like a toy; rather, it resembles a small structure.

And the cat is the owner of this building.
