Color Consultant’s Guide to the Best Cat Tree for Maine Coon Cats
If you have never lived with a Maine Coon, I'd like to remind you first: They are definitely not "ordinary cats".
When I first saw the Maine Coon at my friend's house, it was just like a small mountain cat, firmly perched on the top of the refrigerator, with its tail hanging down, and its eyes saying "This house is mine". At that moment, I finally understood why so many people keep running into trouble when searching for "cat tree for Maine Coon cats".
Because most cat trees simply aren't designed with these "giant cats" in mind.
I have been a color consultant for many years. My daily work is to study the relationship between space, materials and emotions. To put it simply, I have a bit of a "professional obsession" with the visual order of the home. Before that, I always thought that cat climbing frames were a rather ugly presence - furry, cumbersome, like the props in pet stores from the last century.
It was only later that I began seriously researching cat furniture for large cats.
It was also at that time that I first noticed the design concept of Mewzoom, which belongs to a modern home style.
But what really changed my mind was not the "appearance level", but I finally realized: A Maine Coon needs not toys, but a "three-dimensional space" that truly meets its body size, habits and security needs.
Why do Maine Coons have such high requirements for cat tree structures?
Many people mistakenly think Maine Coons are just "a little chunky."
But that's not the case at all.
An adult male Maine Coon can easily weigh 18-25 pounds. It has a wide skeleton, strong jumping power, and a stronger impact when landing. The biggest problem with ordinary cat tree structures is not "they can't be used", but:
- Shake
- Narrow
- Unstable
- Insufficient load-bearing capacity
- The cat bed is too small.
I once witnessed a Maine Coon jumping onto a cheap cat tree, and the entire top platform shook violently like an earthquake. The cat froze in shock for a moment, and then never went up again.
Cats actually care a lot about "stability".
Especially for large cats.
They are not as light as small cats. They need to confirm:
"This thing can support me."
So, the truly good cat tree for Maine Coon cats, the core is never the height, but the structure.
Later, I concluded that what large cats truly need are these 5 things:
1. A platform that is wide enough
Many cat climbing frames have platforms of only the size of ordinary cats.
As a result, when Maine Coon lay down:
- Half of the body is suspended in the air.
- There's no place to put the tail.
- Difficulty in turning around
Cats will simply stop using it.
Later, I discovered that larger cats prefer "open platforms", especially those with designs that allow them to stretch their limbs.
Modern wooden cat trees handle this much better.
2. A truly stable base
This is the most overlooked issue.
When large cats jump, they generate a strong inertia. If the base is too light, the entire tree will shake.
And once the cats lose their sense of security, they won't use it again.
When I choose a cat tree now, I will pay special attention to:
- Chassis weight
- The thickness of the pillar
- Connection structure
- Is it made of Solid wood?
Solid wood structures are especially better for large cats.
3. The cat bed must be deep enough
This is so true.
Many pictures of cat beds look cute, but when Maine Coons get in, they end up looking like "a roast chicken stuffed into a paper cup."
For large cats, they need:
- A deeper sense of envelopment
- Wider space
- Stronger support
Later on, I developed a particular fondness for the rattan basket design because it is breathable and doesn't collapse like a fluffy nest.
Especially in summer.
Long-haired cats are especially sensitive to heat.
4.The height of the scratching post must be sufficient.
The Maine Coon has a particular fondness for stretching and scratching its entire body.
If the scratching post is too short, the cat can only scratch while half-squatting.
Over time, this might even affect the cat's shoulder and back flexibility.
A scratching post that is truly suitable for large cats should at least allow the cat to fully extend its forelimbs.
This is why I later began to prefer multi-layered vertical structures rather than the "short and chubby" types of cat trees.
5. A Homey Feel, Not a "Pet Store" Feel
This might be a professional bias.
But I truly believe that cat furniture can affect the mood of the entire home.
The old gray plush cat tree, when placed in the living room, immediately made the space look like a cheap rental apartment.
But now, many modern designs are completely different.
Wood, rattan, cream color, natural wood texture - these elements make the cat furniture truly blend into the home, rather than being like an awkward big toy.
This actually is also a trend that more and more American families are beginning to value.
Why did I start paying attention to the wooden cat tree?
To be honest, at first it was because other cat trees looked so "ugly."
Later, it was because of its durability.
And then, because I discovered that the wooden structure is actually more friendly to large cats.
Especially for cats like the Maine Coon, which have a large size.
When they jump, they generate a strong impact force, and the wooden structure usually:
- More stable
- Not prone to tipping over
- Will not collapse rapidly
- Longer service life
And there is also a practical issue:
Long-haired cats shed a lot of hair.
Plush cat beds are particularly prone to collecting hair, dust and absorbing odors.
But the wooden surface is much easier to clean.
Only people who have actually lived with long-haired cats really understand this.
Why has that "modern style" cat tree suddenly become popular?
Over the past two years, I have clearly noticed that many families in the United States have begun to incorporate pet spaces into their overall home design.
Especially:
- Small-sized apartment
- Creamy style interiors
- Japandi style
- Mid-century modern
Traditional cat trees are really hard to integrate.
The rise of modern wooden cat trees basically marks the beginning of truly home-friendly pet furniture.
For instance, a model I studied recently called Mewzoom Wooden Cat Tree Tower impressed me with one detail:
It uses a woven cat basket.
This design is actually very smart.
Because although Maine Coons are large in size, many of them prefer a "semi-covered sense of security".
The woven structure is breathable, doesn't get stuffy, and visually doesn't look as heavy as traditional plush nests.
From the perspective of space color, it even resembles a piece of furniture made of natural materials more.
The thing that Maine Coons love the most is actually "the highest point".
This is a common observation I made after observing many large cats.
They particularly like:
- Observation from a height
- Window seat position
- Can look down upon the space
- Having a secure backing
So the placement of the cat tree is even more important than the tree itself.
I usually suggest placing it in:
- By the window in the living room
- The areas that can be illuminated by sunlight
- Near the family activity area
Because Maine Coons are very sociable.
They are not the kind of cats that prefer to be completely alone.
They like to stay "at a high place near humans".
like a silent security guard.
Many people buy the wrong cat tree because they fail to consider the cat's age.
I have suffered from this problem before.
Young Maine Coon:
- Like jumping
- Like climbing
- Like a sense of speed
But after the age of 5, the joint pressure in large cats will increase significantly.
At this point, rather than "high", what is more important is:
- Easy to get in and out
- The spacing between platforms is comfortable.
- Stability of placement
Now I actually prefer the "staircase structure".
Cats can climb up gradually instead of having to make a big leap.
This is especially important for large long-haired cats.
Finally, I discovered that cats actually choose "their own space".
Many people think that cat trees are just for cats to exercise.
But after having cats for a long time, you will find that:
Cats need a sense of territory.
Especially Maine Coons.
They will:
- Set up to sleep on a certain platform
- Fix your gaze on a particular corner.
- Fixed at a high position, watching you cook
That feeling is quite like having a fluffy roommate in the house.
And a truly suitable large cat climbing frame essentially helps cats create a safe space.
Regarding colors, I have a very personal suggestion.
If the house is:
- Light beige color
- White wall
- Creamy Style
- Nordic style
Try to avoid the dark grey plush cat tree.
The visual impact would be very strong.
I would rather recommend:
- Beige color
- Linen color
- Wicker elements
- Milky white structure
Because the area of cat furniture is usually larger than it appears.
It will directly affect the sense of space breathing.
This might not be obvious in the photo, but it is very obvious in reality.
Last point: Don't underestimate Maine Coon's meticulousness when it comes to "comfort"
Many people think that a cat can just be given a cozy place to sleep.
However, large cats are particularly picky about their "furniture".
They will make their own judgment:
- Is it stable?
- Is it hot?
- Is it crowded?
- Do you feel safe?
If they feel uncomfortable, they would rather sleep in cardboard boxes. Really.
So later when I bought the cat tree, I began to pay more attention to:
"Was it designed from the cat's perspective?"
Rather than:
"It looks like it has many functions."
Because having a lot of functions doesn't necessarily mean it is truly suitable for a Maine Coon.
Final Thoughts
Now I increasingly believe that a good cat tree for Maine Coon cats is not merely a pet product.
It is more like a form of communication between humans and cats in their shared living space.
It determines:
- Does a cat feel secure?
- Is the family relationship harmonious enough?
- Can humans and pets truly share the same space?
And when a Maine Coon slowly climbs to a high place, curls up in its own corner, with its tail hanging down., and quietly watches the entire house - you will suddenly realize that you made the right choice in buying this creature.
